The story dates back to 1936, when George Henry Bass reinterpreted a Norwegian farm shoe to create the iconic Penny Loafer, a slip-on shoe that has spanned generations without ever going out of style. The term Loafer means "to lounge," and Penny refers to the coin that was often slipped into the leather notch on top of the shoe. This model was hugely popular in the 1950s, especially among American students with an Ivy League style, who popularized the addition of the penny, which at the time was the cost of a phone call.
True to the original design, G.H. Bass still offers its Larson model today in polished, stiff leather, which will naturally soften to mold to the shape of the foot. The interior is equipped with a leather sole, enhanced with a heel comfort cushion for added comfort. The stitches, made of waxed cotton thread, are hand-sewn for a precise and meticulous result. This 90s version features a lightweight EVA "Lug Sole" outsole, giving the pair a more pronounced line and better grip.
The Penny Loafers from G.H. Bass fit true to size, so you can choose your usual size. They will be stiff at first but will soften and naturally adapt. They also come with a shoehorn, and it is advisable to use shoe trees to maintain their shape.
