Pure Blue Japan

Founded in 1997 in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Pure Blue Japan is a brand of Syoaiya Inc. and one of the iconic names in Japanese denim. Since its beginnings, the brand has developed Made in Japan jeans immediately recognisable for their richly textured fabrics and deep shades of indigo.

Fabric lies at the heart of Pure Blue Japan. The brand carefully selects its cotton and uses deliberately irregular yarns, including Slub yarns, to create its characteristic denim texture. The warp yarns are indigo dyed using the Rope Dyeing process, which leaves the core of the yarn undyed and allows the jeans to gradually develop distinctive contrasts and a unique patina through wear.

The fabrics are then slowly woven in Japan on vintage shuttle looms. By experimenting with yarn shape, tension, density and different shades of indigo, Pure Blue Japan creates highly textured selvedge denim whose sometimes rugged appearance when new changes considerably through wear and washing.

This exploration of fabric has become the brand’s signature, symbolised by the indigo leaf found on its jeans. From its renowned XX fabrics to Slub and Nep constructions and different interpretations of indigo, each denim has its own character and distinctive ageing properties.
