Founded in Osaka in 1997 by Toru Nogami, Samurai Jeans is one of the iconic names in Japanese denim. Since its beginnings, the brand has developed jeans deeply inspired by Japanese culture while pursuing an uncompromising exploration of materials, weaving and construction.

Denim naturally lies at the heart of this approach. Samurai develops its own selvedge fabrics in Japan, selecting different cotton varieties, yarn weights and weaving techniques to create materials with a highly distinctive character. The brand has become particularly renowned among denim enthusiasts for its heavyweight and highly textured fabrics, designed to evolve and develop a remarkable patina through wear.

This exploration extends all the way back to the raw material itself. In 2008, the brand launched the Samurai Cotton Project with a particularly ambitious goal: to grow its own cotton in Japan and create garments whose story begins directly in the fields. In Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, Samurai notably cultivates wamen (和綿), Japanese cotton, without pesticides. It is harvested by hand before being transformed into yarn and fabric in Japan. This long-term project perfectly illustrates the brand’s determination to push the concept of Made in Japan even further.

This attention to materials extends to the smallest construction details, including chain stitching, custom rivets and buttons, leather patches and finishes developed for individual styles. Samurai jeans are made in Japan with the aim of combining the durability of historic denim with a distinctly Japanese identity.

The brand’s universe constantly references its country of origin. Its famous red and silver selvedge evokes the blades of Japanese swords, while its graphic identity depicts the legendary duel between samurai Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. These references express Samurai Jeans’ determination to build an identity that is immediately recognisable as its own.

Nearly thirty years after its creation, Samurai Jeans continues to explore every dimension of denim, from growing cotton to developing original fabrics and constructing the finished jeans. It is a particularly comprehensive approach in which the fabric is designed to evolve through wear and gradually develop a character unique to its owner.
