Sun Surf is a Japanese Toyo Enterprise label specialising in reproductions of the great Aloha Shirts from the golden age of Hawaiian shirting, primarily the 1930s through to the 1950s. Although the Sun Surf name emerged during the 1970s, its history reaches considerably further back.
As early as the 1950s, the company that would become Toyo Enterprise was manufacturing Hawaiian shirts in Japan for American military bases and for export to Hawaii. Toyo therefore has a direct connection to this historical period and has gradually assembled extensive archives of original shirts, fabrics, prints and period documents.
Sun Surf studies these pieces down to the smallest details in order to reproduce them, from the design and placement of the prints to printing techniques, colours, fabrics, buttons, labels and construction methods. The brand notably uses filament rayon, an iconic material in vintage Aloha Shirts whose fluid drape and smooth surface allow the richness of the original prints to be recreated.
Season after season, Sun Surf brings back designs originally created by some of Hawaii’s historic shirt makers. Floral prints, landscapes, traditional scenes and Japanese-inspired motifs are reproduced with particular attention to the original techniques, making many of these shirts genuine historical reproductions rather than simply vintage-inspired garments.
This approach has made Sun Surf a reference in the world of the Aloha Shirt. Somewhere between summer clothing and archival work, its shirts preserve part of Hawaii’s textile history through the Japanese manufacturing expertise of Toyo Enterprise.
