The Grade One Ahina 5Pocket Pants by Sun Surf is part of a historically driven approach to mid-20th century Hawaiian workwear reproduction. It pays tribute to Union Supply, a company founded in 1922 to provide durable garments for sugar plantation workers in Hawaii, where robustness and functionality were essential.
The fabric used, a 12.5oz Ahina denim, is directly inspired by textiles developed locally to meet the specific climatic conditions of the islands: heat, humidity, and intensive labor. Lighter than some mainland workwear denims, it offers an ideal balance between durability, breathability, and everyday comfort. Its deep indigo shade is designed to evolve over time and develop a natural patina.
The construction follows the classic 5-pocket pant design, with a faithful approach to period pieces: straight fit, sturdy build, and simple yet effective finishes. Details such as contrast stitching, rivets, and buttons are directly inspired by historical models distributed in Hawaii during the first half of the 20th century.
Made in Japan by Sun Surf, this model reflects the expertise of Toyo Enterprise, parent company of Sugar Cane, in vintage reproduction. Bridging American heritage denim and Hawaiian textile specificity, it offers a unique interpretation of workwear, true to its historical roots while suited for contemporary wear.
