Sugar Cane is one of the historic brands of Toyo Enterprise and a leading Japanese name in American denim and workwear. Its origins date back to the 1960s, when the company produced clothing in Japan for American military bases. The brand officially adopted the Sugar Cane name in 1975 and gradually developed an exceptionally rigorous approach to reproducing classic American workwear.
At the heart of Sugar Cane is the study of vintage garments. Jeans, denim jackets, chambray shirts, work trousers and military-inspired clothing are analysed down to the smallest details: fabrics, yarns, weave density, stitching, buttons, rivets and construction methods. The objective is not simply to recreate an old silhouette, but also its feel, construction and the way it evolves through wear.
Selvedge denim naturally plays a central role in this research. Sugar Cane develops fabrics in Japan inspired by iconic mid-20th-century American jeans, woven on vintage shuttle looms and designed to gradually reveal their character through wear and washing.
The brand is also renowned for its experimentation with sugar cane fibre. Developed during the 1990s, the Sugar Cane Fiber project notably combines fibres derived from sugar cane with cotton to create denim with distinctive texture and ageing characteristics. This experimentation directly reflects the brand’s name and has become one of its most original signatures.
Through Sugar Cane, Toyo Enterprise offers a particularly well-researched interpretation of American workwear made in Japan. Historical accuracy is combined with textile experimentation to create robust garments designed to be worn for years and gradually transformed by their owner.
