ROTOTO socks are manufactured in Japan's largest sock-producing region, Nara Prefecture. The area has been known for its quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial production of socks was first introduced in 1910 when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) brought a weaving machine back to his hometown from the United States after studying abroad.

ROTOTO places great emphasis on collaboration in its product research: "We start by selecting the right yarns with craftsmen to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines depending on the type of material and the intended use of the product. This can involve rare machines specialized for specific purposes, old non-computerized knitting machines, or, conversely, modern high-tech tools."
