The story dates back to 1936, when George Henry Bass reimagined a Norwegian farm shoe to create the iconic Penny Loafer, a slip-on moccasin that has spanned generations without ever going out of style. The term Loafer implies "loafing around" and the Penny refers to the coin that was often slipped into the leather notch on the top of the shoe. This model was hugely popular in the 1950s, especially among American students with an Ivy League style, who popularized the addition of the penny, which at the time was the cost of a phone call.
True to the original design, G.H. Bass still offers its Larson model today in polished smooth leather, initially stiff but naturally softening to mold to the shape of the foot. The interior features a leather insole, enhanced with a heel comfort cushion for added comfort. The stitching, made from waxed cotton thread, is handcrafted for a precise and meticulous finish. This Heritage version retains the smooth outsole, maintaining the classic and formal look of this historic loafer pair.
The Penny Loafers from G.H. Bass fit true to size, you can choose your usual size. They will be stiff at first wear but will soften and naturally adapt. They also come with a shoehorn, and it is advisable to use shoe trees to maintain their shape.
