This pair of socks from ROTOTO is made from a blend of cotton and Washi, a Manila hemp paper fiber also used in making currency. This fiber, which features highly advantageous properties like water absorption and moisture wicking, is usually very difficult to turn into textile fiber. Only the right machinery, coupled with genuine craftsmanship, can achieve the best results, which is the case here.
ROTOTO socks are manufactured in Japan’s largest sock-producing region, Nara Prefecture. The area has been known for its quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial production of socks was first introduced in 1910 when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) imported a weaving machine from the United States to his hometown after his study trip to the country.
ROTOTO places great value on collaboration in its product research: "We start by selecting the right yarns with artisans to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines according to the type of material and the product use. This could involve rare machines that have a specific purpose, old non-computerized knitting machines, or, conversely, modern high-tech tools."
The ROTOTO socks can only be made by combining the right materials, the right machine, and the artisan's know-how.
Preserving the tradition inherited from previous generations, while painting the future with a fresh perspective. We will continue to try to produce items that can only be created here."
