The story dates back to 1936, when George Henry Bass reinvented a Norwegian farm shoe to create the iconic Penny Loafer, a slip-on moccasin that has spanned generations without ever going out of style. The term Loafer means "to lounge," and Penny refers to the coin that was often slipped into the leather slot on the top of the shoe. This model saw great success in the 1950s, particularly among American students with an Ivy League style, who popularized the addition of a penny, which at the time was the cost of a phone call.
True to the original design, G.H. Bass still offers its Larson model today in polished smooth leather, initially stiff, which will naturally soften to mold to the shape of the foot. The interior features a leather insole, enhanced with a heel comfort cushion for added comfort. The stitching, made with waxed cotton thread, is handcrafted for a precise and meticulous result. This Heritage version maintains the smooth outsole, preserving the classic and formal look of this historic moccasin pair.
The Penny Loafers from G.H. Bass are true to size, so you can choose your usual size. They will be stiff at first but will soften and naturally adjust. They also come with a shoehorn, and it is recommended to use shoe trees to maintain their shape.
