This pair of Checkeboard socks from ROTOTO is crafted on old knitting machines using a blend of organic cotton and silk yarns, and synthetic materials that add softness and durability. Its design features a checkered pattern, scaled up and knitted in such a way as to eliminate one of the issues with Jacquard socks, namely the lack of horizontal elasticity. The numerous inner threads resulting from this type of weave are also eliminated, making the sock comfortable.
ROTOTO socks are manufactured in Japan's largest sock-producing area, Nara Prefecture. The region has been known for its quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial sock production was first introduced in 1910 when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) imported a weaving machine from the United States to his hometown after his study trip to the country.
ROTOTO places great value on collaboration in its product research: "We start by selecting the right yarns with artisans to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines based on the type of material and product use. This can be rare machines that have a specific use, old non-computerized knitters, or, on the contrary, modern high-tech tools."
ROTOTO socks can only be made by combining the right materials, the right machine, and the artisan's expertise.
"Preserving the tradition inherited from previous generations, while painting the future with a fresh perspective. We will continue to try to produce things that can only be created here."
