The Lucky Charm Doll by Beams Japan is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Japanese Daruma, a symbol of luck, perseverance, and goal achievement. Designed by BEAMS JAPAN, it reimagines this iconic cultural object with a modern and decorative approach.
The history of the Daruma dates back over 1,000 years and is deeply rooted in Japanese Buddhist tradition. The Daruma represents Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk from the 6th century and founder of Zen Buddhism. According to legend, he meditated facing a wall for nine consecutive years without interruption, in such a rigid posture that his limbs atrophied, which is why the Daruma is depicted without arms or legs.
From this legend comes a powerful symbol:
"Fall seven times, stand up eight" (七転び八起き – nanakorobi yaoki)
This legend illustrates resilience and the ability to never give up despite failure. A popular tradition developed around the Daruma: one eye is filled in when setting a goal or wish. Once it is achieved, the second eye is filled in as a sign of gratitude. The Daruma then becomes a witness to your success.
Each piece is hand-painted ceramic, giving it a unique character. Both a decorative object and a lucky charm, this figurine embodies the spirit of Japanese culture, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, characteristic of the BEAMS JAPAN universe.
