The story dates back to 1936, when George Henry Bass reimagined a Norwegian farm shoe to create the iconic Penny Loafer, a slip-on moccasin that has spanned generations without ever going out of style. The term Loafer means "to lounge," and Penny refers to the coin that was often slipped into the leather slot on the top of the shoe. This model was hugely successful in the 1950s, particularly among American students with an Ivy League style, who popularized the addition of the penny, which at the time was the cost of a phone call.
True to the original design, G.H. Bass still offers its Larson model today in polished, initially stiff leather, which will naturally soften and mold to the shape of the foot. The interior features a leather insole, enhanced with a heel comfort cushion for added comfort. The seams, made from waxed cotton thread, are hand-stitched for a precise and meticulous finish. This 90s version features a lightweight EVA "Lug Sole" outsole, giving the pair a more pronounced profile and better grip.
The Penny Loafers from G.H. Bass fit true to size, so you can choose your usual size. They will be stiff at first wear but will soften and naturally adapt. They also come with a shoe horn, and it is recommended to use shoe trees to maintain their shape.
