Every year-end at Flâneurs brings back an event that’s become a tradition since its inception two years ago: our collaboration with Momotaro.
The Japanese label, established in 2006 in Kojima, Okayama Prefecture, is one of our oldest and most prestigious suppliers of selvedge denim. It’s renowned for the quality and durability of its fabrics and is a leading representative of Japanese craftsmanship, both in weaving and traditional dyeing techniques.
So, it’s no surprise that our two previous collaborations were met with such enthusiasm, further strengthening an already solid partnership.
After launching the FnM002 in a 16.5oz Hard-Slub selvedge denim and the FnM003 in a 13oz Heavy Oxford canvas, we’re proud to continue the Momotaro x Flâneurs adventure with the FnM004 "Knit-Ish" Denim.
1/ Fabric Selection:
Our first two collaborations with Momotaro reflected shared DNA with our store through distinctive fabrics offered by Collect, the parent company and manufacturer of both Momotaro and Japan Blue.
For FnM004, the choice was quite different. Early this year, we received a beautiful cardigan from Momotaro made from a unique fabric that immediately caught our eye: "Knit-Ish" Denim.
Momotaro "Knit-Ish" Cardigan
This 100% Zimbabwean cotton fabric, weighing 11oz, is a true trompe-l'œil, looking deceptively like classic denim. In reality, it’s more like a knit ("Knit-Ish") with a soft feel and natural stretch, woven in a way that allows the weft to flex.
Its denim-like appearance comes from the deep indigo dye used on the warp (outside), contrasted by an undyed white weft (inside). As expected, the indigo will fade over time with wear and washing, developing a nuanced, sky-blue patina.
The result is more like a fleece than traditional denim, offering the comfort of sweatpants with the visual appeal of jeans. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of outfits, while maintaining unmatched comfort.
2/ Design and Inspiration:
Given the success of the FnM003 fit, we chose to keep it, with a few slight adjustments. The previous design had a notably high rise, especially in sizes L and XL. Considered too high, we reduced the rise by 3 to 6 cm.
Otherwise, we retained the same relaxed, easy-to-wear fit with a high waist and narrower leg opening, creating an oval silhouette typical in Japanese wardrobes.
Original sketches
Initially, this cut was a reinterpretation of an existing Momotaro shape, modified per our request and named "Flâneurs Original Fit".
After extensive research and sketching, we opted for a belt inspired by Japanese army trousers from WWII.

The offset back belt loops allow for comfortable, evenly distributed tightening around the waist.
The distinctive belt features a stiff back panel and a long self-tie design, allowing for various knot styles.
The back of the belt includes a comfort-enhancing "V" split, and the inner waistband is lined with the same jacquard fabric used for the pocket bags, featuring the Momotaro logo.
Another Momotaro signature: the inseam is sewn with a chain stitch in pink thread, referencing the peach color in the Japanese folktale. This detail remains subtle when worn but adds a touch of contrast and originality to the tone-on-tone seams.

Final details: a welted coin pocket was added above the right pocket, along with two small darts extending from the front belt loops for extra comfort.

3/ Fit and Sizing:
Unlike what you might expect from Japanese brands, we wanted this model to be "true to size", better suited to local body types with more standard sizing. You can choose your usual size—or the one closest to it.
One big advantage of this fabric is its natural stretch. As a result, the pants can be sized down for a more tapered, fitted look with a slightly lower rise, or sized up for extra comfort and a more loose, voluminous silhouette with a higher rise.
Plus, the addition of the tie belt allows you to adjust the fit and style as you wish.

In the photos, Quentin is 1.74m tall and weighs 70kg. As you can see, the length is also flexible, giving you the option to hem or wear as-is.
To choose the right fit, we recommend using our sizing guide below to compare the measurements to your favorite pair of pants or jeans.
