Oni Denim is an iconic Japanese denim label, led by the legendary Oishi-san, an artisan who has devoted over sixty years to creating exceptional selvedge fabrics. Each production is made on vintage low-tension looms, producing a unique texture and natural irregularity. Volumes are intentionally limited, ensuring an authentic and confidential manufacturing approach.
This 275 20oz Awa Kakishibu × Kinari model perfectly illustrates the brand’s artisanal philosophy. The warp is dyed using the traditional Awa Kakishibu-zome (阿波柿渋染) method, a natural dyeing technique from Tokushima using fermented persimmon juice rich in tannins. This copper-brown hue gradually deepens over time and exposure to light. The weft, left kinari (生成り – undyed), adds contrast and brightness, enhancing the weave's relief and patina effects.
Weighing 20oz, this heavy fabric has a firm and dense hand, symbolizing durability and character. Low-tension weaving gives it the irregular texture characteristic of Oni, promoting pronounced fades and unique aging. Each jean is individually pre-washed using the traditional Tempi method, ensuring a comfortable fit from the first wear while preserving the richness of the dye.
The 275 Regular Straight cut evokes the spirit of 1950s American jeans: a straight, balanced silhouette with a mid-rise, designed for a timeless and comfortable look. Signature details include hidden rivets, “donut” buttons, chain-stitch seams, and a natural leather patch, reflecting meticulous attention to every element.
