Oni is a mysterious label behind which stands a true denim enthusiast who has devoted 60 years of his life to the craft. Constantly striving for perfection, Oishi-san is in a perpetual state of research and focuses solely on production. For this reason, you will find neither an official website nor an official Instagram page for the brand. This is also why the label is only available in a handful of stores worldwide, and exclusively at Flâneurs in France.
Made from a 15oz fabric, the "Ishikawadai" is produced using cotton spun on a Japanese Ishikawadai machine, the oldest of its kind, dating back to 1953. Unlike modern machines, the Ishikawadai spins cotton at a much slower speed—around 30%—resulting in a less stressed fiber and giving the fabric a more natural appearance. The result is similar to hand-spun yarn, with subtle irregularities in thickness and a slightly textured feel.
Another distinctive feature of this model is that it is woven using the same cottons as the famous Secret Denim, Oni’s iconic fabric. Its unique color is achieved by combining a warp yarn dyed in Greencast indigo, with green/blue hues, and a beige-dyed weft yarn. This combination, along with very low-tension weaving on a 1950s shuttle loom, will develop a patina unlike any other.
The 222 "Super Wide Straight" from Oni is the brand’s most ambitious fit, succeeding the 200 "Wide Straight". A very high rise and generous back rise are followed by a wide straight leg from thigh to hem. It is unusual to see this kind of silhouette from Oni, but the craftsmanship of its creator makes it a true success for those looking to explore a bold, vintage-inspired wide fit.
This model runs small, we recommend choosing one size above your usual size. Due to the low-tension weaving, the fabric will stretch quickly and significantly, providing increased comfort over time with wear.
