Nigel Cabourn Medical Shirt Indigo Selvedge Chambray

A true classic from the Nigel Cabourn wardrobe, the Medical Shirt is inspired by shirts worn by doctors accompanying British expeditions in some of the most demanding environments. Its construction combines a functional fit with a multitude of details drawn from military clothing and vintage workwear. This version is made from a Japanese-developed Indigo Selvedge Chambray, whose texture, finishing and ability to develop a patina over time make it a particularly representative piece of the brand’s approach.

Description

The Medical Shirt is one of Nigel Cabourn’s most iconic designs. Its inspiration can be traced back to functional shirts worn by doctors taking part in major British expeditions, where clothing had to withstand demanding conditions while allowing a high degree of freedom of movement. Nigel Cabourn takes this philosophy and translates it into a contemporary shirt in which every detail reflects genuine research into historical military clothing and workwear.

The construction is particularly interesting. The areas running from the shoulders to the armholes and across the back are lined and reinforced, while the sleeves also feature a reinforced construction from the cuffs to the elbows. This additional layer is complemented by ventilation eyelets, helping maintain good airflow despite the robustness of the construction. Triple Needle stitching reinforces the main seams and gives the shirt the particularly solid construction characteristic of Nigel Cabourn pieces.

This version is made from an Indigo Selvedge Chambray, a fabric whose character lies as much in its weave as in its ability to evolve over time. The yarns are dyed before weaving to create the particular depth associated with indigo chambray. The visible Selvedge details on the reinforced panels and gussets further highlight the garment’s crafted, workwear character.

Indigo also provides an excellent foundation for a genuine patina story. With wear and washing, the fabric gradually fades in the areas subjected to the most friction, creating contrasts around the seams, folds and points of contact. The puckering (the wrinkling of the fabric around the seams) created by the construction and washing further accentuates this evolution. The shirt is therefore designed as a piece that never remains entirely the same over time.

The details complete this functional approach. The chest pocket incorporates a pen holder, a subtle reminder of the model’s medical origins, while the cat-eye buttons provide a finish directly inspired by vintage workwear. The elbow reinforcements and various panels are never purely decorative: they contribute to the construction of a shirt designed to be worn, used and gradually marked by its owner.

The result is a shirt that sits somewhere between a lightweight jacket, a work shirt and a military garment. Its volume allows it to be worn on its own, open over a T-shirt or layered with other pieces, while the indigo chambray gives it considerable versatility. It works equally well with denim, military trousers or chinos, as well as with more dressed-up pieces.

Fit

The Medical Shirt has a comfortable fit designed to allow freedom of movement. Its reinforced construction and generous proportions allow it to be worn on its own or layered, almost like a lightweight jacket. The fit can also be appreciated slightly oversized to highlight the different panels, the drape of the chambray and the model’s characteristic details. It is important to note that this model runs large, with a considerable body length. We suggest choosing your usual size for the fit intended by the brand, or sizing down to reduce the overall width and adjust the fit.

Why we selected it

The Medical Shirt Indigo Selvedge represents exactly what we appreciate about Nigel Cabourn: a piece whose richness only truly reveals itself when examined closely. The Indigo Selvedge Chambray, reinforcements, Triple Needle stitching, ventilation eyelets, cat-eye buttons and functional details come together to create a shirt with remarkable depth. But above all, we appreciate its ability to evolve: the indigo will gradually fade, the seams will gain contrast and the fabric will develop its own character. A true wardrobe piece designed to become more beautiful the more it is worn.
