The 6oz Indigo Stripe Work Shirt by Sugar Cane is part of an experimental and historically driven approach to vintage workwear reproduction. The Fiction Romance line explores garments based on real but often fragmentary archival references, reconstructing coherent pieces from multiple historical sources. The aim is not only to reproduce, but to “rebuild” lost garments by combining documentary research with interpretative design.
The fabric is a lightweight 6oz cloth developed through a complex yarn-dyeing process using multiple tones including off-white, light grey, saxe blue, purple, and indigo. Some grey fibers are treated with a kasuri-like effect. This weaving technique recreates rare striped textiles found on vintage garments, often influenced by both European and early workwear traditions.
The construction follows classic American work shirt codes: two flap chest pockets, side gussets for improved mobility, and a durable assembly designed for everyday use. The metal cat’s eye buttons, intentionally aged, reinforce the vintage and utilitarian character of the piece.
Made in Japan by Sugar Cane, this shirt embodies the “Fiction Romance” concept: a documented reinterpretation of the past where authentic historical elements are recomposed into a coherent garment, balancing reproduction and interpretation. It fully reflects the philosophy of Toyo Enterprise, centered on textile precision and the memory of utilitarian clothing.
