The 1966 Model (SC42966) by Sugar Cane is a reproduction of a pair of jeans made in 1969, commonly referred to as the “66 model” in the world of vintage denim. Considered one of the most accomplished models of the post-workwear American era, these jeans mark a turning point in the history of contemporary denim: the fit becomes slightly more relaxed, the fabric appears visually lighter while retaining its weight, and the style gradually shifts from workwear to the casual wear of the 1960s. It is part of Sugar Cane’s Standard Denim line.
The fabric is a Japanese 14oz selvedge denim, slowly woven on vintage Toyoda shuttle looms from a blend of Texan and Zimbabwean cotton. Compared to other models in the range, the 1966 fabric features a more controlled yarn irregularity and a brighter, more vivid blue tone — a characteristic of late-1960s denim, whose shade stood in contrast to the deeper, heavier indigos of previous decades. The fabric is designed to develop a progressive patina typical of that era, echoing vintage denim as it is known today.
The Regular Tapered fit is defined by a high waist close to that of the 1947 model, a roomy thigh, and a slight taper that narrows from the knee to the hem. It offers a balanced silhouette faithful to the casual aesthetic of American denim from the second half of the 1960s, without exaggeration. The construction meticulously reproduces period details: button fly with iron buttons, hidden copper rivets, twill pocket bags, and a paper patch — a characteristic signature of jeans from that era, which had by then replaced the leather patches of earlier models.
Made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a subsidiary of Toyo Enterprise, the SC42966 reflects an approach to reproduction where no detail is overlooked: spinning, weaving, dyeing, and assembly are all carefully studied and fully mastered. A key piece in the Standard Denim lineup, it bridges the gap between post-war workwear denim and the jeans culture of the 1960s.
