This pair of Organic Cotton Wide Rib Socks by Rototo is rooted in the great Japanese tradition of premium ribbed socks. The organic cotton is knitted in a wide rib (wide rib) structure, resulting in a robust texture that is slightly thicker and more structured than classic fine ribs. This construction improves the sock’s hold on the leg while providing a comfortable, enveloping feel.
The design remains minimalist yet artisanal, making it suitable for everyday wear as well as casual or heritage-inspired styles. The wide rib knit helps balance elasticity, support, and breathability, making these socks versatile across all seasons (especially spring and autumn). The added synthetic fibers allow the fabric to retain its shape over time without compromising the natural feel of the cotton.
The ROTOTO socks are made in Japan’s largest sock-producing region, Nara Prefecture. This area has been renowned for its high-quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial sock production was first introduced there in 1910, when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) imported a knitting machine from the United States to his hometown after a study trip abroad.
ROTOTO places great importance on collaboration in its product research: “We begin by selecting the right yarns together with artisans to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines according to the type of material and the intended use of the product. These may be rare machines designed for specific purposes, old non-computerized knitting machines, or, on the contrary, modern high-tech equipment.”
