"More Wear, More Wonderful" is the guiding philosophy of Omoto Denim, a young Japanese label founded by Hiroki Kishimoto, former General Manager of Japan Blue Jeans. By working alongside some of the finest Japanese artisans, Omoto Denim aims to continue promoting Japanese denim craftsmanship while preserving the traditional know-how and techniques that have built its reputation.
The origins of the happi date back to the Edo period, when it was worn by samurai as a form of haori. Its imposing and functional appearance drew the attention of the general public, who gradually came to admire it and eventually adopt it themselves. Over time, the happi spread throughout Japanese society, becoming both an everyday garment and a festive outfit. Today, while retaining the codes of its traditional design, it is reinterpreted with great creative freedom and stands out as a distinctive piece in the contemporary wardrobe.
This version is offered in a 12oz Cube Sashiko fabric, dyed indigo for the warp yarns (outer face) and black for the weft yarns (inner face), adding depth and richness to the overall color. This fabric will develop a beautiful patina as the dye fades with wear. The beauty of Sashiko fabric patina lies in its varied levels of fading: the raised stitched areas lighten first, leaving deeper tones in between and enhancing the fabric’s nuances. Another key benefit of this weave is comfort. As the weave is not overly dense, it offers a supple and pleasant feel from the very first wears.
The Sashiko weave is an integral part of Japanese culture. Originally a decorative embroidery technique also used in garment construction, it was historically employed for firefighters’ uniforms during the Edo period. Today, Sashiko can be found in Judo and Kendo uniforms, as well as in the collections of many Japanese brands committed to preserving tradition. The Cube designation here refers to the jacquard loom used, which creates a regular Sashiko pattern with a distinctive cubic texture.
Minimalist in construction, with no collar or fastening system, this happi favors a fluid and functional silhouette. The lower patch pockets and wide sleeves extend its utilitarian heritage, resulting in a balanced piece that bridges Japanese tradition and a contemporary interpretation of historic workwear.
Offered in one size, this jacket is intentionally designed to be oversized to fit as many people as possible.
