The Union Supply Palaka Check Shirt Blouse by Sun Surf is part of a faithful reproduction approach to early 20th-century Hawaiian workwear. It pays tribute to Union Supply, a company founded in 1922 by Yasuda Kayoji, which provided durable garments for sugar plantation workers in Hawaii.
The fabric used, a 10oz Palaka Check cotton, is emblematic of Hawaiian workwear. Developed to meet the local climatic conditions—heat, humidity, and intensive labor—it stands out for its durability, breathability, and flexibility. Historically, these simple yet hard-wearing fabrics quickly gained popularity and became a staple in work garments of the era.
The construction follows a shirt blouse silhouette, halfway between a shirt and a lightweight jacket, typical of utility garments worn in plantations.
