Description

The SD-1102 reflects Studio D’Artisan’s commitment to reproducing the character of early American jeans through a particularly demanding Japanese approach. Its Ishikawadai 13.5oz denim was developed to recreate the feel and appearance of 1950s denim, favoring slow, traditional manufacturing methods over production efficiency.

At the heart of this approach is the Ishikawadai machine, an old ring-spinning machine manufactured in 1953 by Ishikawa Seisakusho Co. and considered to be the oldest still in operation in Japan. Its production speed is approximately three times slower than that of modern machines, significantly reducing productivity while minimizing the stress placed on the cotton fibers.

The denim uses an American cotton known as Deep South Cotton, grown in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in the southernmost part of Texas. This fiber has a firm texture and natural resilience, making it particularly well suited to the pursuit of a dry-hand denim with a raw, authentic character. To preserve its natural qualities, the traditional yarn preparation process is deliberately simplified.

The indigo warp also undergoes a specific treatment. The yarn is not subjected to all of the usual refining processes, allowing more of the fiber’s natural character to be retained and creating a naturally irregular indigo shade. This approach gives the fabric a lively surface, with subtle variations reminiscent of vintage denim.

Every stage of production has therefore been designed to capture the spirit of jeans from 1953, from the slow spinning of the cotton through to the weaving and finishing processes. The result is a dry-hand denim with an irregular texture and authentic character that will gradually develop greater depth and definition through wear and washing.

The construction of the jeans follows the codes of 1950s Wide Straight models, with a generous and balanced silhouette, a relatively high rise and a robust construction. The cotton-thread stitching will also evolve alongside the fading of the denim, allowing the entire garment to develop a cohesive patina over time.
