With the Manga Open Collar Shirt, Studio D’Artisan revisits Japan’s visual heritage through the Chōjū-giga, a famous illustrated scroll dating back around 1,200 years and widely considered one of the earliest forms of visual storytelling in the world. Its expressive scenes of animated animals—rabbits, frogs, and playful creatures—are here reinterpreted into a richly detailed contemporary textile.

The fabric is developed using the traditional Printed Kasuri technique, a rare and highly precise Japanese process. Although it is technically a printed fabric, the result is so intricate and refined that it is often mistaken for an actual woven structure. Every step—from yarn treatment to weaving and stencil-based printing—is entirely carried out by hand by skilled artisans, preserving a craft now maintained by only a handful of workshops in Japan.
