Samurai Jeans is a renowned Japanese label, known for pushing the boundaries of heavyweight selvedge denim. Every jean is made in Japan from premium cotton and woven on vintage shuttle looms, offering exceptional texture, outstanding durability, and unique fading potential. But Samurai’s expertise isn’t limited to denim—the brand also produces other garments, like this zip-up hoodie, crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail and passion.
This hoodie is made from a dense 410 g/m² (14.5oz) fabric, knitted with an open-end air-spun yarn. This technique gives the fabric a firm, dry texture and remarkable durability. The same yarn is used for the ribbing, ensuring consistency in texture and fit throughout the garment.
The true uniqueness of this piece lies in its deep-dyed jersey: first in natural indigo, then overdyed with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), a natural dye used in clothing since the Heian period (794–1192). This traditional method strengthens the color’s durability and adds antibacterial properties. Over time, the hoodie develops a deeper, subtly nuanced shade, unique to each garment. The fabric is cut to allow the kakishibu color to show on the front as well, and slight variations in tone may appear, adding to the piece’s authentic character.
The fit is comfortable, featuring a double-layer hood with drawstring and a robust YKK double-slider zipper. Finishes, including ribbed cuffs and hem made from the same yarn as the body, ensure comfort and longevity. The flat-seam construction of the main seams provides maximum strength, reflecting Samurai Jeans’ demanding craftsmanship.
