The Red Wing Shop Moc Toe is a classic, moccasin-style shoe made in Red Wing, Minnesota. It is the low-cut version of the iconic Moc Toe, originally designed for hunters and farmers in the early 1950s and built to withstand tough labor in harsh weather conditions. The name "Moc Toe" comes from "Moccasin," the traditional Algonquian Indian word for the U-shaped toe.

Black Prairie leather is a double-tanned leather featuring a brown core with a black exterior. It ages very well and will turn to a dark brown with time and wear.

The signature Vibram Cushion Crepe sole with Traction Tred provides maximum grip and exceptional comfort.

Red Wing Heritage shoes are handcrafted in the USA using traditional construction techniques. The brand uses the finest raw materials to create extremely durable shoes and boots. It takes over 230 steps to manufacture each pair of shoes.

THE TANNING

Red Wing Heritage is one of the few companies to own its own tannery: the S.B. Foot Tanning Company in Red Wing, Minnesota.

The S.B. Foot Tanning Company prepares the hides and soaks them in wooden vats with oils from trees, tanning agents, and dyes. After soaking, the tanned leathers are rolled, dried, and stretched before undergoing several quality tests and being transported a kilometer further to the Red Wing factory.

This is crucial as the brand's reputation is largely built on the robustness, durability, and quality patina of Red Wing leathers.

CUTTING

The shoe-making process, largely unchanged since the founding of Red Wing, starts with the cutting of the leather. Highly skilled craftsmen carefully place sharp cutting dies on each large piece of leather. Selecting the most quality parts of the leather is a very important step that requires great expertise and a lot of experience.

ASSEMBLY

The cut leather pieces are then meticulously sewn together by experienced operators to form the shoe upper. They work on the same century-old sewing machines that were already used at the start of the Red Wing Shoe Company.

SOLE ATTACHMENT

The outsole is hand-sewn to the midsole. This is a complex action requiring great precision to ensure that the last step of the shoe construction process is perfectly executed.

GOODYEAR WELT

Most Red Wing Heritage shoes are made using a Goodyear welt. This is a construction method dating back to 1869. Renowned for its durability, the Goodyear welt joins a thin strip of leather to the upper and insole of the shoe. Goodyear welted shoes are also easy to resole, ensuring their long-term, continuous use.

FINISHING

All shoes are meticulously inspected twice before being packed in shoe boxes. Depending on the type of leather, each shoe is cleaned, polished, brushed, and finished by a dedicated team.
