Description
A Japanese label dedicated to thoughtfully designed everyday clothing and carefully developed fabrics, Sugar & Co. revisits a classic piece of American outerwear with the Gentle Coat. Originally designed for automobile travel, the car coat is characterized by straightforward construction, a comfortable length and a silhouette allowing freedom of movement. Sugar & Co. draws on these elements to create an understated jacket that deliberately moves away from traditional denim jacket conventions while retaining their utilitarian spirit.
The Gentle Coat is made from Supima cotton selvedge denim, developed through a distinctive approach to yarn production and weaving. Known for its exceptionally long and fine fibers, Supima cotton is spun into deliberately irregular yarns before being woven at extremely low tension on traditional Japanese shuttle looms. This process produces a highly textured fabric, with subtle variations that give the indigo considerable depth and character. A particularly interesting construction detail is the double red-line selvedge, left exposed along an interior back seam, highlighting the careful use of the fabric throughout the garment. The denim also undergoes a One Wash treatment, softening the fabric and helping minimize shrinkage during subsequent washes.
The Gentle Coat features a generous straight silhouette, slightly dropped shoulders and a mid-length cut that covers the hips. These proportions create a relaxed drape while maintaining a structured appearance. More understated than a conventional denim jacket, it can easily be layered over a t-shirt, shirt or lightweight knitwear. Its Indigo colorway will gradually evolve through wear and washing, revealing the subtle variations and irregularities characteristic of the fabric.
Made from the same denim as the Gentle Pants Indigo, this jacket can also be worn as a matching set, creating a cohesive silhouette that fully showcases Sugar & Co.'s approach to fabric development.
Cut & Fit
The Gentle Coat features a relaxed straight fit, with slightly dropped shoulders, comfortable room through the chest and a length that extends over the hips. Its generous proportions allow for easy layering without restricting movement.
We recommend choosing your usual size to maintain the relaxed silhouette intended by Sugar & Co. Sizing down may be considered for a closer fit, depending on the garment measurements. As the denim has already been washed, further shrinkage should be minimal.
Why We Selected It
What we particularly appreciate about Sugar & Co. is the brand's ability to reinterpret classic American clothing without losing its original character. With the Gentle Coat, the label offers an interesting alternative to the traditional denim jacket, allowing the simplicity of the silhouette to highlight the fabric's distinctive qualities. Supima cotton, low-tension weaving and generous proportions come together in a piece that feels both individual and easy to wear, particularly when paired with the matching Gentle Pants.
