The Big Shirt Jacket from Japan Blue is a new addition to their Sashiko collection. This overshirt, with a relaxed and slightly oversized fit, is made of 11oz sashiko fabric, known for its soft texture and everyday comfort. Two large front pockets add a functional touch inspired by European workwear. Versatile and unisex, it can be worn alone or layered, making it an ideal piece for transitional seasons.
The fabric is dyed with black sulfur, on both the weft and warp threads, offering a progressive and unique patina similar to indigo. This process highlights the embroidered sashiko stitches, which lighten first, creating visual contrasts over time.
Historically used for firefighter coats during the Edo period, sashiko is a traditional Japanese technique that is both decorative and functional, still used today in martial arts (judo, kendo) and contemporary Japanese fashion. The loose weave of this shirt offers flexibility and comfort from the first wear.
