"More Wear, More Wonderful" is the guiding principle of Omoto Denim, a young Japanese label founded by Hiroki Kishimoto, former general manager of Japan Blue Jeans. Collaborating with some of Japan’s finest artisans, Omoto Denim seeks to preserve and promote traditional Japanese denim craftsmanship and techniques that have built its worldwide reputation.

The Type II denim jacket is a historic model first introduced in 1953. It differs from the earlier Type I, released in the early 1900s, by adding a second chest pocket and removing the back cinch. It features a characteristic boxy fit accentuated by twin pleats on the front. Originally, these pleats were meant to accommodate shrinkage or weight gain, and could be cut open with scissors to allow extra room. The Type II has a straighter drape and slightly shorter length that naturally sits at the hips. This reinterpretation by Omoto Denim also integrates two side welt pockets, which are sewn inside to double as inner pockets.

This 16oz denim fabric has a pronounced neppy texture, recognizable by its natural irregularities. The warp yarns are spun from short-staple cotton fibers (27 mm or less), giving the fabric a rawer character, while the weft yarns are produced using the traditional “Gara-bo” spinning method, resulting in an uneven, hand-spun-like texture.

Rope-dyed with pure indigo, the warp yarns develop a deep blue hue that will gradually reveal strong contrasts through wear and washing. The fabric is woven under low tension on a vintage Toyoda GL8 shuttle loom from the 1950s, producing a dense and durable texture. Though unsanforized, the denim has undergone a one-wash process to stabilize sizing and provide immediate comfort, without risk of further shrinkage.

For finishing touches, the jacket features original embossed iron buttons, copper rivets reinforcing stress points, and a vegetable-tanned leather patch. These details reflect the uncompromising Japanese craftsmanship and Omoto Denim’s commitment to creating garments that are robust, authentic, and timeless.
