Description

The 1914 takes the construction of the classic SD-101 by Studio D'Artisan and combines it with a fabric that gives it a radically different character. Its 17oz Bushu Sashiko features an exceptionally dense and irregular texture, inherited from fabrics traditionally used to provide warmth and reinforcement to workwear and Japanese martial arts garments. A robust material, but above all an extraordinarily expressive one, whose texture fully reveals itself when worn.

The true singularity of the 1914, however, lies in its coloration. The fabric is dyed in Amami Ōshima using Dorozome, an ancestral mud-dyeing technique deeply rooted in the history of the island. The process combines tannins extracted from Sharinbai, a tree native to Amami, with naturally iron-rich mud originating from geological strata more than 1.5 million years old. Successive dye baths allow these natural elements to react and oxidize within the fibers.

The result is this deep Dark Brown shade, almost black in places, yet crossed by brown nuances that appear differently depending on the light. As each pair is dyed individually, slight variations in color are inherent to the process and are an integral part of its character. This is therefore not simply a color applied to a fabric, but a true organic coloration shaped by a craft passed down through centuries.

The construction features the details for which Studio D'Artisan is renowned: engraved copper rivets, hidden rivets on the back pockets, Herringbone-lined pockets, chain-stitch seams and a slightly offset central belt loop. The fly uses natural corozo buttons, a plant-based material whose organic appearance works particularly well with the overall dyeing process.

The embossed cowhide leather patch is another of the most distinctive details of this edition. Its custom graphic reflects the world of Amami Dorozome and immediately recalls the exceptional origin of this series. The leather adds another material dimension to a piece already built entirely around natural processes and materials, and will itself gradually develop a patina through wear.

Over time, the Sashiko will naturally soften, while areas exposed to tension and friction will cause the color to evolve. Creases, whiskers, knees and hems will gradually reveal different depths of brown, creating a patina unique to each pair. The natural character of Dorozome makes this evolution particularly interesting: no two pairs will develop exactly the same shades or the same history.

The 1914 is therefore not a piece intended to remain pristine. Its appeal lies precisely in its ability to evolve, transform and retain the marks of the person wearing it. It is this almost personal dimension that brings the jeans closer to a textile piece than to a simple garment.

Fit

The 1914 features a Regular Straight fit directly inspired by the SD-101, with a mid-rise waist, a generous upper leg and a straight line down to the hem. This balanced construction gives the Sashiko enough room to fully express its texture while maintaining an timeless silhouette that is easy to wear and pair with other pieces.
