The Battle Dress Uniform Shirt (or BDU) from Japan Blue Jeans is directly inspired by classic American military shirts, reinterpreted through the brand’s Japanese textile expertise. Designed as a utilitarian piece, it incorporates key elements of military garments with a robust construction, functional pockets, and a straight fit that works equally well as a shirt or a lightweight overshirt.
This model is made from back satin fabric, a material historically used in U.S. military uniforms from the 1950s. Back satin is characterized by a smooth and soft inner face for comfort against the skin, while the outer surface has a slightly irregular, matte texture. Thanks to its dense weave, this fabric offers an excellent balance between durability, structure, and comfort.
The sulfur dyeing process (硫化染め, Ryūka-zome) is a traditional Japanese technique that produces deep, muted tones while enhancing the fabric’s durability. It allows the color to evolve subtly over time and with washing, giving the garment a unique and authentic character.
