This pair of Checkeboard socks from ROTOTO is made on old knitting machines using a blend of organic cotton and silk yarns, and synthetic materials for added softness and durability. Its design features a checkered pattern, scaled and knitted in such a way as to eliminate one of the common issues with Jacquard socks, namely the lack of horizontal elasticity. The many internal threads that result from this type of weaving are also eliminated, making the sock comfortable.
ROTOTO socks are manufactured in Japan’s largest sock-producing region, Nara Prefecture. The area has been known for its quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial sock production was first introduced in 1910 when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) imported a weaving machine from the USA to his hometown after a study trip to the country.
ROTOTO places great value on collaboration in its product research: "We start by selecting the right yarns with craftsmen to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines according to the type of material and the use of the product. This may involve rare machines that have a specific use, old non-computerized knitting machines, or, conversely, modern high-tech tools."
