With the RBC “Red Bird Chicago” Hoodie, the Japanese label XX Development offers much more than a simple sweatshirt: a true historical reconstruction. This piece originates from a vintage 1950 hoodie once owned by a player of the Chicago Cardinals, whose story and owner were traced — an extremely rare occurrence in vintage clothing. Worn throughout a lifetime, repaired, aged, and preserved as a symbol, this garment became the starting point of an ambitious project: to extend its story by recreating it as faithfully as possible, down to the smallest details. An almost archival approach, where every decision is guided by authenticity rather than modernization.

The development begins with the fabric. The fleece is entirely re-engineered from the original: fiber analysis, reproduction of irregularities, and pursuit of a dry, slightly granular texture typical of vintage sweatshirts. The resulting fabric has a dense, lively hand, designed to evolve over time and naturally develop patina. Built in double-layer construction, the finished hoodie weighs a substantial 21.6oz, ensuring structure, durability, and stability.

The dyeing process follows the same philosophy. Inspired by 1950s techniques, it favors less uniform, deeper tones intended to evolve with washes and exposure to the elements.

Construction is equally meticulous. The pattern faithfully reproduces the original vintage proportions, including design choices that may seem unconventional by today’s standards. Separate pockets were reconstructed from traces found on the original piece, and sewing techniques — chain stitch, cover stitch — were replicated following the original assembly order.

The slightly boxy, straight cut reflects 1950s silhouettes. It offers a natural drape, comfort, and everyday wearability while maintaining a strong vintage identity. With the RBC Hoodie, XX Development does not aim to reinterpret the past, but to bring it back to life. A piece designed to endure over time and continue writing its story for decades to come.
