Oni Denim is a cult Japanese denim label, founded by the legendary Oishi-san, who has devoted over sixty years to mastering artisanal selvedge fabrics. Faithful to a confidential production philosophy, the brand works on vintage low-tension looms, producing unique, dense, and textured fabrics in extremely limited quantities.
This 275 20oz Awa Sumi × Awa Sho-Ai model represents one of Oni Denim’s rarest creations. The fabric is woven with warp threads dyed using the traditional Awa Sumi (阿波墨染) method, a natural black ink dye, and weft threads in Awa Sho-Ai (阿波正藍染), a traditional indigo from Tokushima, recognized as an ancestral Japanese artisanal craft. This combination gives the denim a unique shade, subtly nuanced between deep gray and indigo blue, which will develop into a unique blue-gray fade over time.
Weighing 20oz, this fabric embodies the most robust and authentic vision of Japanese denim: rigid at first, it gradually softens and develops a pronounced texture, a result of the loose and irregular weaving characteristic of Oni fabrics. Each jean is individually pre-washed using the traditional Tempi method, ensuring a comfortable fit from the first wear while preserving the richness of the dye.
The 275 Regular Straight cut offers a straight, balanced silhouette inspired by 1950s American jeans, suitable for everyday wear. Classic Oni details are present: chain-stitch seams, hidden rivets, “donut” buttons, and natural leather patch, reflecting meticulous craftsmanship and respect for the Japanese selvedge tradition.
A true collector’s piece, the 275 Awa Sumi × Awa Sho-Ai illustrates the convergence of two iconic Tokushima crafts — indigo dyeing and sumi dyeing — combining history and modernity in a single fabric of Japanese denim.
