Oni is a mysterious label behind which a true denim enthusiast hides, who has dedicated 60 years of his life to denim. Always in search of perfection, Oishi-san is constantly experimenting and focuses solely on production. This is why you will not find any official website or Instagram page for the brand. It is also why the label is distributed only in a few select stores worldwide, and exclusively at Flâneurs in France.
The Secret Denim is arguably the most iconic fabric offered by ONI. It is largely thanks to this fabric that the Japanese label built its reputation among selvedge denim enthusiasts worldwide. One of the distinctive features of Secret Denim is its unique color. To achieve this particular tone, the warp thread (outer thread) is rope-dyed in indigo with a slight green tint, called Greencast. On this version, the weft thread has a Light Brown hue, giving the denim rich tonal variations and a spectacular fading potential over time.
This type of fabric cannot be produced on modern machines. To create it, shuttle looms are set to very low tension. This special setting, called "low tension", literally makes the machines shake during production. By combining this weaving technique with cotton yarns of naturally irregular thickness, the result is a denim even more textured than classic slub fabrics, with inherent softness and comfortable give. Due to the difficulty of mastering this technique, few manufacturers attempt it, but ONI has excelled with this unique fabric whose quality is unquestionable.
The 822ZR-LBR represents a brand-new, more daring fit in the Japanese maker’s lineup: a Super Wide Tapered silhouette with pronounced volume from hips to knees, then subtly tapered down to the leg opening. Constructed from one of ONI's most expressive fabrics, this jean combines a modern design with the unique texture and depth of Secret Denim.
