Oni is a mysterious label run by a true denim enthusiast who has dedicated 60 years of his life to denim. Always seeking perfection, Oishi-san is constantly researching and focuses solely on production. That is why there is no official website or Instagram page for the brand. It also explains why the label is distributed in only a few select stores worldwide and exclusively at Flâneurs in France.
The Secret Denim is arguably the most iconic fabric offered by ONI. This denim has largely contributed to the brand’s global reputation among selvedge denim enthusiasts. One of the defining features of Secret Denim is its unique color. To achieve this special hue, the warp yarn (outer thread) is dyed ("rope dyed") in indigo with a slight green tint, called Greencast. In this version, the weft yarn has an Olive tone, giving the denim rich tonal variations and spectacular fading potential over time.
This type of fabric cannot be produced on modern machines. To make this denim, shuttle looms are set to very low tension. This special setting, called "low tension", literally makes the machines shake during production. Coupled with the use of naturally irregular cotton yarns, the result is an even more textured denim than a classic "slub" fabric, with inherent softness and comfortable stretch. Due to the difficulty of mastering this technique, few manufacturers attempt it, but ONI has succeeded in creating a unique denim whose quality is unquestionable.
The 200 is a "Wide Straight" cut with a high waist and a straight, wide leg from thigh to ankle. Made from one of ONI’s most expressive fabrics, this jean combines modern design with the unique texture and depth of Secret Denim.
This model runs relatively small, so we recommend choosing one size up from your usual size. Due to the low tension applied during the weaving process, it will stretch quickly and noticeably, providing increased comfort over time with wear.
