Description

With the Amami Mud Dyed Shirt, Studio D’Artisan continues its exploration of Japanese textile craftsmanship through Dorozome, a traditional dyeing technique native to Amami Ōshima. Used for over a millennium, this method relies entirely on local natural resources and produces shades that cannot be replicated through modern industrial dyeing processes.

The fabric is a blend of 86% cotton and 14% linen. To enhance its character, the material undergoes a long washing process using specialized machines. This treatment develops a naturally wrinkled, uneven texture while also increasing softness. From the very first wear, the shirt feels and looks like a garment that has already aged gracefully over years of use.

The dyeing is carried out using the traditional Amami Dorozome method. The fabric is repeatedly soaked in plant extracts derived from Sharinbai (Rhaphiolepis umbellata), then immersed in the iron-rich mud of Amami Ōshima. Repeated cycles gradually fix the color, resulting in deep, complex brown tones. Entirely free of synthetic dyes, this technique produces organic shades whose depth and variation directly reflect their natural origin.

The result is a Dark Brown tone that feels both understated and alive, blending multiple earthy nuances that shift depending on the light. Unlike synthetic dyeing, Dorozome offers a subtle visual depth and a quiet yet distinctive presence, making it a hallmark of this unique craft.

The construction is intentionally minimal to let the material speak for itself. Natural corozo buttons complement this approach and reinforce the garment’s organic identity. The overall aesthetic is simple, authentic, and deeply rooted in Japanese artisanal traditions.

Made in Japan, this shirt perfectly reflects Studio D’Artisan’s philosophy: combining ancestral techniques with contemporary garment construction to create pieces whose richness reveals itself gradually over time and wear.

Why we selected it

We selected this piece for the rarity of Dorozome from Amami Ōshima, one of Japan’s most iconic natural dyeing techniques. With its pre-aged cotton-linen fabric, exclusively plant- and mud-derived coloration, and intentionally understated aesthetic, this shirt embodies a vision of clothing where the textile itself tells the essential story. A discreet piece in appearance, yet exceptionally rich in both technical and cultural depth.
