The history of the Daruma dates back over 1,000 years and is deeply linked to Japanese Buddhist tradition. The Daruma represents Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk of the 6th century, who founded Zen. According to legend, he meditated facing a wall for nine years without interruption, in such a rigid posture that his arms and legs atrophied, which is why the Daruma is depicted without limbs.
From this legend, a powerful symbol was born:
"Fall seven times, stand up eight" (七転び八起き – nanakorobi yaoki)
This legend illustrates resilience, the ability to never give up despite failures. A popular tradition has developed: one fills one eye of the Daruma while setting a goal or wish. When it is achieved, the second eye is filled as a sign of gratitude. The Daruma then becomes a witness to your success.
Made in Takasaki, Japan, it is crafted from papier-mâché and weighted at the bottom so that it always rights itself. This version offered by Omoto Denim is dyed in indigo and comes with a small cap and a denim stand.
