Pure Blue Japan is the project of Kenichi Iwaya, a true denim enthusiast who grew up in Okayama. After gaining experience working in various factories in the region, he decided to create his own brand in 1997. Iwaya-San has since been obsessed with producing incredible fabrics, with unique textures and distinctive character.
Over the years, Pure Blue Japan has built a strong reputation among denim enthusiasts worldwide, producing unique pieces each season on an artisanal scale with undeniable quality. This Type II jacket showcases an exclusive fabric known as "Waterfall", perfectly illustrating the expertise of Pure Blue Japan artisans, rightfully nicknamed "Masters of Slub". Weighing 14.5oz, this denim offers an ideal balance between comfort and character. Its uniqueness lies in the use of indigo yarns in different shades, randomly assembled in the warp, creating a distinctive vertical flowing effect reminiscent of a waterfall. The fabric also features a pronounced irregularity and a grainy hand, typical of the brand. This rich texture will evolve over time, developing deep and high-contrast fades known as "Tate-Ochi" (縦落ち), a vertical fading of indigo that follows the warp yarns and creates visible vertical streaks, enhancing the "waterfall" effect.
Production of this fabric remains intentionally limited, as the vintage looms used by Pure Blue Japan allow only low output. Each piece therefore has its own unique character, reinforcing the exclusivity of these garments.
Retaining the original details of classic Type II jackets, first introduced in the early 1950s, this model features two chest flap pockets with button closure, a five-button front closure, side adjusters at the waist, the iconic front pleats on either side of the placket, as well as contrasting stitching.
This version offered by PBJ has nevertheless been slightly modified, notably with the addition of two side hand pockets, as well as a slightly longer overall length and a more balanced fit than original vintage models, making it easier to wear on a daily basis.
All the iconic details of this renowned manufacturer are of course present, including a full set of branded iron buttons, an embossed lambskin leather patch, as well as the famous "Shoaï" indigo leaf embroidered along the side seam at the left hip. These finishes, combined with the limited production, make this jacket a must-have piece in the world of Japanese denim.
