The 274-AWA from ONI Denim is an exceptional piece representing the pinnacle of Japanese denim craftsmanship. This jean is made from Awa Shoai Denim, a precious fabric produced exclusively for ONI at the Awa Shoai Koubou workshop in Tokushima, the historic birthplace of Japanese indigo dyeing. The technique used here is rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, where each yarn is hand-dyed before being woven on antique shuttle looms, ensuring depth of color and tonal variations that cannot be achieved with industrial methods.
The production of a single batch of Awa Shoai fabric can take 14 to 18 months. Every step — yarn preparation, natural indigo dyeing, drying, arrangement, and hand weaving — is carried out with extreme care. The result is a thick and textured denim of approximately 16oz with pronounced relief, visible irregularities, and a unique three-dimensional feel that evolves beautifully over time and wear.
The Regular Straight fit of the 274-AWA is versatile and timeless. It offers a straight drape from the hips to the leg opening, with balanced volume for maximum comfort and a purist style. The high waist and straight leg ensure a classic look while allowing the denim’s texture and rich tonal nuances to shine.
The jeans are offered in one wash, pre-washed and ready to wear with controlled shrinkage while preserving the fabric’s raw integrity. The seams are solid chain-stitch, stress points are riveted, and the back pockets feature hidden rivets for a clean look. The coin pocket displays the characteristic selvedge, and the vegetable-tanned deer leather patch is individually numbered, highlighting the exclusivity of each pair.
