Oni is a mysterious label led by a true denim enthusiast who has dedicated 60 years of his life to the craft. Always striving for perfection, Oishi-san focuses exclusively on production. That is why the brand has no official website or Instagram account. It is also why the label is only available in select stores worldwide and exclusively at Flâneurs in France.
The Secret Denim is arguably the most iconic fabric offered by ONI. It is largely thanks to this denim that the Japanese label has built its reputation among selvedge denim aficionados worldwide. One of the signature features of the Secret Denim is its inimitable color. To achieve this unique shade, the warp thread (outer thread) is rope dyed in indigo with a subtle green tint, known as Greencast. In this version, the weft thread is dyed Olive, giving the denim rich tonal variations and a spectacular fading potential over time.
This type of fabric cannot be produced on modern machines. To create it, shuttle looms are set at a very low tension. This specific adjustment, called "low tension," literally makes the machines shake during the weaving process. Coupled with naturally irregular cotton yarns, the result is a denim even more textured than classic "slub" denim, with inherent softness and comfortable ease. Because this technique is difficult to master, few manufacturers attempt it—but ONI has succeeded in creating a truly unique fabric whose quality is unquestionable.
The 288 is a Regular Straight cut featuring a high waist, deep rise, and straight leg from thigh to hem, reminiscent of the classic straight fits that have shaped denim history.
This model runs small, so we recommend choosing one size above your usual size. Due to the low tension applied during the weaving process, it will stretch quickly and significantly, providing increased comfort over time with wear.
