Based on the design of "tube socks" made in the USA in the late 70s, these ribbed socks from ROTOTO are produced on an old, hard-to-find knitting machine using low-tension soft cotton yarns. The inside of the sole part is brushed for a unique fleece-like feel, distinctive to the Japanese brand.
ROTOTO socks are manufactured in Japan's largest sock-producing region, Nara Prefecture. The area has been known for its quality textiles since the 17th century. Industrial production of socks was first introduced in 1910 when a man from the former village of Umami (now Koryocho) imported a weaving machine from the USA to his hometown after a study trip to the country.
ROTOTO places great emphasis on collaboration in its product research: "We start by selecting the right yarns with craftsmen to develop the design of a new material. After that, we choose the knitting machines based on the type of material and the use of the product. This could be rare machines that have a specific use, old non-computerized knitting machines, or conversely, modern high-tech tools."
ROTOTO socks can only be made by combining the right materials, the right machine, and the artisan's know-how.
